This course is designed to teach students how to refine their strokes to swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Skills will be introduced and practiced that are required to successfully complete the prerequisite requirements for the Lifeguard Certification Program.
The purpose of this class is to train instructor candidates to teach basic-level Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding Water Park Lifeguarding and Shallow Water Attendant (all including first aid), Lifeguard Management, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Blood borne Pathogens Training: Preventing Disease Transmission and Basic Water Rescue courses. Instructor candidates also will become familiar with Guard Start: Lifeguarding Tomorrow and the Water Safety presentations. In order to take this class, you must complete the Fundamentals of Instructor Training Certification (given the first night of the course) and successfully complete a pre-course written Lifeguarding exam and demonstrate competency in pre-course skills and scenarios evaluation.
Are you interested in becoming a lifeguard? You must be 15 years of age or older and be able to attend all classes. At the first session of the class, you must successfully complete the prerequisite skills test. The test includes a 300 yard continuous swim, and the retrieval of and swimming with a 10-pound brick. Your training will include: how to recognize and respond effectively to all emergencies in and around the water, emergency rescue techniques, CPR, First Aid and AED training. The fee includes all books, supplies and use of all equipment.

This class allows a lifeguard to recertify with CPR/AED for the Lifeguard and/or Lifeguarding and First Aid. The participant must have passed their Lifeguarding course within the past four years in order to recertify.

As a Red Cross certified Water Safety instructor, you are authorized to teach the Red Cross Learn to Swim program-Levels 1 through 6; Parent and Child Aquatics programs; water safety outreach programs for schools, and community centers, Basic Water Rescue, and Home Pool Safety courses. We must have a minimum of 6 registered by the Monday before the class begins in order to teach the class.
